		<description>Miami Dade Public Library System
Exhibition Proposals Art Services and Exhibitions

For this exhibition the collective would like to create work based on the minimalistic aesthetic of the Braille system and the abstract fact that it was the first digital form of writing. We want to present how strong of a vehicle for connection this system is. However we want to do it without having any physical raised characters (cells). We want to visually display the universal power that such a system can silently portray. We would like to propose ten 1’x10’ horizontal strips of book titles- written in Braille- but in a completely flat surface and illuminated from behind, from a thin light box that would only be 1’-6” wide. Light always has a great impact in any interior space, so by taking the initiative to change/add lighting we can reinforce the experience for our audience. It can also be seen as an oxymoron, as Braille is widely used by blind people to read and write. The main 1’x10’ frames would be wood pieces, interior lighting for the piece would be projected from long fluorescent light bulb tubes, the strips would be made plexi glass and the ten written titles would be seen in frosted glass. The ten book titles would be the top ten most popular books from the main library. This idea steams from the basic curiosity of what Miami’s members are reading, and yet no one has really any control over. For this we would use the library’s online catalog database. We would happily provide all our materials, and look forward to working with the library. Since a lot of our project will be based from books of the main library, that is the library of our location and our proposed time is six weeks.

“There are no Flamingos in Miami” Locust Projects: The Billboard Project
Nov - Dec 2011 (In conjunction with Art Basel 2011)

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105904/1354408/FLAMINGO.jpg" width="670" height="195" width_o="2048" height_o="598" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105904/1354408/FLAMINGO_o.jpg" data-mid="7692705"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Miami Florida has always been known for its sandy beaches, exotic women, and spicy nightlife; undoubtedly the all the stereotypes of this grand city have yet to remain unproven. A Miami native cannot help but wonder if this is truly what an outsider believes our city and its inhabitants are all about. Despite what popular televisions shows, films, and music have illustrated throughout the course of Miami’s history, their ideas and standards of our city seem to fall in the categories of inaccuracy, misconceptions, and are just outdated.
Since moving away from the greater 305 area, our collective has often found ourselves in the midst of debate with outsiders that are unfamiliar with Miami territory. What we’ve discovered is that this stereotype of “the party city where the heat is on” is still thriving in the minds of everyone who doesn’t reside here. In the year 2011, our Scarface and Miami Sound Machine days are over, we break the news to our counterparts and fill them in with small piece of South Florida information that in fact: There are no flamingos in Miami.
Who started this idea that we had flamingos here to begin with? According to the Audubon Society of Greater South Florida, Flamingos did once reside in Miami back during the arrival of the Europeans to Florida in the mid 1500s but since that time the population of Flamingos has diminished and they no longer breed here. This news may also come as a shock to several Miami natives.
The project entitled “There are no flamingos in Miami” comes out of a sheer platonic love for our city; it’s community, and inhabitants. The show aims to focus on revealing these misconceptions, about Miami as well as shine a light on what we collectively believe Miami is truly about. In that respect, we will glorify and draw attention to the lesser- known parts of Miami, and take bits and pieces from our own experiences living here by visually using facts, quotes, maps, postcards and a variety of hand crafted art objects.
